During the last 7 years of being in business we have done hundreds of estimates, where we have met hundreds of people. Would you believe that 95% of our prospective clients never ask one question about our company or our employee's background? Now that is alarming, especially in the tree care industry. Please, don't be shy. Ask questions, put them on the spot and test their knowledge of the trade.
There are too many tree services in operation that have no clue how to properly care for a tree, or furthermore respect your property. Be the interviewer when hiring a tree service and don't just take their word for it. Write their answers down and research for yourself.
It is worth your time to ensure you're not "barking up the wrong tree." Protect your property that you have worked hard for and invested in.
Here is an example of some good questions to ask while receiving an estimate:
1.) How long have you been in business?
2.) Can you give me 5 references with phone numbers and type of work your company did for them?
3.) Are you insured? (Be sure to ask for the name of the company & the phone number for the agent.) THIS IS A BIG ONE.
4.) How would you do the job at hand? (If you have the gut feeling they really don't know what they are talking about, then more than likely they don't.)
5.) What kind of knots do you use when climbing? (We would be happy to supply any homeowner with a list of basic climbing and rigging knots for reference.)
6.) Do you wear PPE? (Personal Protective Equipment)
7.) Have you actually climbed trees yourself?
